Professor James M. Lisy
He received his B.S. degree from Iowa State University in 1974 and his
Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1979.
He joined the faculty at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
in 1981 and spent his career investigating intermolecular interactions
in neutral and charged molecular clusters. After 30 years, he elected to
take early retirement and spent 9 months at the Ruhr University - Bochum
as an Alexander von Humboldt Fellow. He then moved to the National Science
Foundation in Arlington, VA, where he served as a program officer for over
5 years. During that time, he also was a visiting or guest professor in
France, Japan, and Denmark. Prof. Lisy is currently a Specially Appointed
Professor in the Laboratory for Future Interdisciplinary Research of Science
and Technology (FIRST) and the Institute of Integrated Research (IIR) at the
Institute of Science Tokyo where he continues to pursue research on ionophores
and ion channels. In addition, he serves as an advisor to the ANNEX-Berkeley
Program that drives Science Tokyo’s education and research activities
in North America, and as a senior scientific advisor to the Director of
the Institute of Molecular Science in Okazaki, Japan. Prof. Lisy
is a member of the International Advisor Board of RESOLV (Ruhr Explores
Solvation), where he has served since 2015. When not abroad, he resides
on the Big Island of Hawaii.
